Ethernet Configuration for Macintosh OS 8-9

Acquiring a new/clean copy of the TCP/IP Preferences folder (optional)

The procedure involves removing the TCP/IP preferences folder. If you wish to keep a copy of your old TCP/IP preferences, you should copy them to another folder other than the Preferences folder or to a disk.

  1. Close all windows
  2. Click on the MACINTOSH HARD DRIVE
  3. Browse to the SYSTEM FOLDER and then to PREFERENCES
  4. Find the TCP/IP PREFERENCES and drag them to the trash
  5. Close all windows
  6. When the TCP/IP settings are opened again, a new preferences folder is automatically created.

Configure new TCP/IP settings

  1. Click on the APPLE MENU and then click CONTROL PANEL and TCP/IP

  2. Once the TCP/IP Control Panel is open, click on the EDIT Menu and select USER MODE
  3. Click ADVANCED and click the OK button
Note: USER MODE can be basic or advanced. The only difference is that the Advanced mode will have more fields that will be unpopulated once connectivity is acquired.

  4. Under Connect via: - Select Ethernet or Built-in Ethernet (depending on the OS)
  5. Under Configure: - Select USING DHCP SERVER
  6. Leave EVERYTHING ELSE blank. This includes:
    • DHCP Client ID
    • Search domains:
    • Any other available fields
  7. The rest of the fields will populate themselves with: <will be supplied by server>

  8. Click the Options button to bring up the TCP/IP Options window
  9. Ensure Active is selected and Load only when needed is unchecked, then click the OK button

  10. Close the TCP/IP control panel by clicking the close box in the upper left corner of the window.
  11. When the save dialog appears, click SAVE

  12. Open the browser and attempt to visit various Web sites

Note: Most systems (at least OS 8.0 and above) DO NOT require restarting the computer.
