Ethernet Configuration for Windows 9x and ME
Before configuring your computer, please be sure you have the operating system CD in the event you are prompted to install files.
This page assumes that the Ethernet card is installed in the computer. Note: File and Printer Sharing is NOT supported.
To configure your computer settings with DHCP for Windows 9x and ME operating
systems:
- Close all applications
- Click the START button in the lower left corner of your screen
- Select SETTINGS and click CONTROL PANEL
- Double-click the Network icon
- Click the Configuration tab
- Scroll through the list and locate the TCP/IP protocol specific to your
Ethernet Network Interface Card
- Highlight the protocol
- Click the PROPERTIES button below the window
- A new window opens with multiple tabs
- Click the IP ADDRESS tab
- Locate and verify that the button labeled: OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS
AUTOMATICALLY is selected
- Click the WINS CONFIGURATION tab
- Locate and click the button labeled: USE DHCP FOR WINS RESOLUTION
- Click the GATEWAY tab
- Make sure there are no addresses (numbers) listed (if there are addresses
listed, highlight them and select REMOVE
- Click the DNS CONFIGURATION tab
- Locate and click the button labeled: DISABLE DNS
- Click the BINDINGS tab
- Verify that CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS is CHECKED
- Click the ADVANCED tab
- Verify that the box labeled: SET THIS PROTOCOL TO BE THE DEFAULT PROTOCOL is
selected
- Click OK
- The Network box reappears
- Click the IDENTIFICATION tab
- Locate the box marked: COMPUTER NAME
- Type a name for your computer in the COMPUTER NAME field
- Type Edinboro in the WORKGROUP field
- Type a brief description of the computer in the COMPUTER DESCRIPTION field.
- Click OK and OK again.
- The computer will install any additional needed drivers and software, prompting you for the systems disks or CD-ROM if necessary. Restart your computer.
