Problem: You get a message
saying "The computer is not receiving a response from the modem." or "Port in Use"
Solution:
- Be sure modem cable is plugged in correctly and securely. If you are using an external modem, make sure that your modem is turned
on and that your computer is connected to the line input jack on your modem. If you are using an internal modem, make sure that the cable is plugged into the "Telco" or "Line In" jack.
- Power-cycle the computer and modem. Turn off the computer. Wait 30 seconds and power on the computer.
- Remove all devices between wall jack and the modem. This includes line splitters, surge protectors, fax, and do not use a duplex jack.
- Voice mail. If you use voice mail, there may be messages waiting. If this is the case, a "stuttering" tone is generally heard. Clear messages.
- Reset the modem using an initialization string.
1. On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.
3. Double-click the 'my connection' or 'Stargate' icon.
4. From the menu bar, click File and choose Properties.
5. Click on the Configure button.
6. Select the Connection tab.
7. On the lower right, click on the Advanced button.
8. If you have it, consult your modem document for an initialization string
suitable for PPP or TCP/IP connections.
9. In the Extra settings field, type z, followed by the initialization string.
If you do not have your modem's users manual, try ATZ, AT&F1 or AT&F.
10. Click OK.
11. If your dialer can now connect to the Internet, you are able to use your
Internet applications (Netscape Navigator, Eudora, AOL, etc.)
If these instructions do not work, check the modem using
Hyperterminal.
