Spam (Junk Email)

The following are the steps to follow in order to successfully set up your spam filter.

First, you have to log onto the webmail site, by going to https://mail.expedient.net, where your Username is your full email address and your Password is the one tied to the username. See Figure 1.

Once logged in, if this is your first time on this page you will be shown a welcome screen and will be asked for your Full Name and Email Address. See Figure 2. This information is used when sending emails from this site. Once done entering the information, select Submit and it will then take you directly to your inbox. (If you have already submitted this information before you will be taken directly to the inbox.).

Once the page loads, you should see a dividing line creating two areas: a skinny one on the left and a fat one on the right. The left side holds all of your email folders and the right side displays the contents of the selected folder. You will also notice a few links along the top of the right side. See Figure 3. In order to set up your spam filter, you want to select Options from this menu.

Once this page loads, you will see two rows of settings. Each one sets up a certain part of your email. For your spam filter, we will focus on the bottom part of the left column. To set up your filter to start blocking spam, select SpamFilter Configuration. (Figure 4)

Once the new page shows up you should notice a new sub-folder under your inbox within the left frame labeled Spam. (Figure 5) As soon as you see this sub-folder, your spam filter has been successfully activated. Now it is time to configure it.

Within the right frame you will see a few options to set up. The top part (See Figure 6) is where you can block certain addresses from getting into your inbox. This process is also known as blacklisting. You can also put people on a whitelist, which is telling the filter to always allow these people through. This is important if you do not want to have your legitimate mail blocked by the server, and if you do not want to receive mail from someone who constantly sends you “bad” messages.

The bottom part is also important. See Figure 7. This is where you set how strict, or lenient you want the filter to be on your emails. The stricter you set it the more emails will be marked as spam. You will see two levels: the Tag Level and the Kill Level. The lower these numbers are the stricter the filter gets. Whenever email is sent it goes through spam databases. Those databases assign the message a number, and if that number matches or is above the Tag Level then the message is labeled as spam and sent into the spam folder. The Kill Level works the same way, however, messages that get blocked by the Kill Level will not appear in your spam folder, and will automatically get deleted without you knowing it was ever there. The default level for the Tag Level is 6 and the Kill Level is 12. Recommended Levels are Tag Level 3 and Kill Level 10. Always make sure the Tag Level is lower than the Kill Level, or it does you no good. After you are done setting up your addresses and the Tag/Kill levels, left-click Set Custom Policy to save your settings.

Congratulations! Your spam filter should be all set up now. There are additional spam filters that can be turned on, if you are still receiving a heavy amount of spam. The additional filters are found under the options menu and under SPAM Filters. See figure 4 for its location. These filters are off by default. See Figure 8. Select edit to turn on the filters and tell the filters which folder you would like the spam to go to.

If you are done setting up your spam filter and you still notice spam coming into your inbox, do not fret. Not all spam can be blocked by a single filter. Even with multiple filters active it is still impossible to block every piece of spam.
